What to expect at your first audition with Milwaukee Children’s Choir:

Grades K4-K5: Children enrolling in Songbirds need not audition or attend a preview.

Grades 1-3: Interested children entering grades 1-3 are many times seeking their first choral experience. If they love to sing and are socially ready, MCC’s Prelude Choir is the right place for them! A one-on-one audition is not required for entry at the Prelude level, however we ask children to attend a Prelude Preview to see how they like it. In a Prelude Preview, choir directors lead a group of children in fun singing games, as well as other age-appropriate, educational activities. These activities, which lay the foundation for music literacy and performance, are presented in a non-threatening, fun environment. If children enjoy the Prelude Preview, we invite them to join MCC’s Prelude Choir.

Grades 4-12: Interested children entering grades 4-12 need to audition. The purpose of the audition is to place singers in the appropriate choir. If it is your first audition with Milwaukee Children’s Choir, we ask you a bit about yourself. We have you sing ascending and descending scales with the piano to check your singing range—this means how high and low you can sing. You'll sing the first stanza of a familiar song. You’ll read a poem or paragraph we give you so we can hear your speaking voice. You'll echo sing melodic and rhythmic patterns, answer some music theory questions, and sight-read melodic and rhythmic patterns--don’t worry if you don’t know how to read music. We will teach you this in choir! You do NOT need to bring a prepared song or an accompanist. If you have a song that you would like to sing for us, we will be glad to hear it, but this is strictly optional. Our goal is to make you feel at ease in your audition, and determine which choir would benefit you most as a singer.

A student entering grades 4-12 may be placed in MCC's Cantabile, Jubilate or Youth Chorale. To arrange for an audition, please call 414-221-7040 or send an email to the MCC office.
